MODERN FOLK

During the 1600-1800's many Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants practiced 'hexology' - whereby protective shields were sewn into quilts and painted onto dwellings with the intention of safeguarding their families and livestock from nefarious energies. These glyphs often comprised of geometric patterns, horses, birds and botanicals - which were believed to act as charms of good fortune.  In this application the images are created initially with ink and then digitally modified into pictograms. Additionally the goal is both a modernist approach (removing non-essential elements), as well as maintaining a folk perspective and preserving their former "magic."
